What women's health physiotherapy covers

Women's health physiotherapy - also called pelvic health physiotherapy - assesses and treats the muscles, nerves and connective tissue that support the bladder, bowel and pelvic organs, along with the musculoskeletal changes that come with pregnancy, birth and menopause.

Symptoms such as leaking with a cough or a run, heaviness or dragging in the pelvis, pain with sex, a tummy gap that has not closed, or back and pelvic pain in pregnancy are common - but common is not the same as something you have to live with. Most are assessable, and physiotherapy can help with many of them.

Your session is one-to-one, in a private room, for the full appointment time. What follows is an overview; the detail lives on each service and condition page.

Your first appointment

The first session starts with a conversation, not an examination. Your physiotherapist will ask about your history, your symptoms and what you want to get back to - running, lifting your child, sleeping through the night, sex without pain.

A physical assessment follows. For pelvic floor concerns this may include an internal vaginal examination, which is the most accurate way to assess how the pelvic floor muscles are working. It is always optional, always explained first, and only carried out with your informed consent. If you would rather not, or it is not appropriate that day, your physiotherapist will assess using external and functional measures instead.

You will leave with an explanation of what was found and a plan you have agreed to, usually combining in-clinic sessions with a home programme.

Who you will see

Our physiotherapists are female and registered with the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC), with postgraduate training and hospital experience in women's and pelvic health. You can read their full backgrounds on their profiles: Cheryl Long, Claire Ng and Kristy Ng.

Frequently asked questions

What is women's health physiotherapy?

Women's health physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of conditions affecting the pelvic floor, abdomen and musculoskeletal system across a woman's life - through pregnancy, after birth, and around perimenopause and menopause. It covers bladder and bowel symptoms, prolapse, pelvic and abdominal pain, diastasis recti, scar recovery and return to exercise. Pelvic floor muscle training is recommended as a first-line treatment for common conditions such as stress urinary incontinence in international clinical guidelines.

Do I need a doctor's referral to see a women's health physiotherapist in Singapore?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with us. If your assessment suggests input from a gynaecologist, urogynaecologist, colorectal specialist or another doctor would help, we will say so and can work alongside them.

What happens at the first appointment?

Your first session starts with a conversation about your history, your symptoms and what you want to get back to. Your physiotherapist then carries out a physical assessment, explains what they found, and sets out a plan with you - usually a combination of in-clinic sessions and a home programme. A pelvic floor appointment is 55 minutes; a Mummy and Baby assessment is 85 minutes.

Is an internal examination always required?

No. An internal vaginal examination is the most accurate way to assess pelvic floor muscle function, but it is always optional and only ever carried out with your informed consent, after your physiotherapist has explained what it involves. If you prefer not to have one, or it is not appropriate on the day, the assessment is adapted using external and functional measures instead.

Are your physiotherapists female?

Yes. Our physiotherapists are female and AHPC-registered, with postgraduate training and clinical experience in women's and pelvic health.

How much does women's health physiotherapy cost in Singapore?

At Goji, a 55-minute women's health physiotherapy appointment is $260 at the clinic or $330 as a home visit. The 85-minute Mummy and Baby assessment is $330 at the clinic or $380 as a home visit. Prices are per session and include the assessment, treatment and your plan.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your symptoms, your goals and your starting point. Your physiotherapist will recommend a plan after the first assessment. International guidelines for pelvic floor muscle training generally suggest a supervised programme of around three months before formally reassessing progress.

Can I be seen at home instead of the clinic?

Yes. We offer home-visit physiotherapy across Singapore, which many patients use in the early weeks after birth or when getting to a clinic is difficult. The clinic itself is at Lentor Modern, a one-minute walk from Lentor MRT on the Thomson-East Coast Line.

I gave birth years ago. Is it too late?

No. Pelvic floor muscles respond to training at any age and any stage, whether you are newly postpartum, years past your last birth, or navigating perimenopause. Longstanding symptoms are still worth assessing.
